About

District 17 Simcoe County was formed in 1985. It is subdivided into four units — Barrie and area, Orillia / Midland and area, South Simcoe (Alliston / Bradford) and area and Collingwood and area.

Each year District 17 awards grants in support of local organizations. Recipients for 2022 include Youth Haven, Sunset Manor, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul – Bradford, Matthew’s House, Hawkestone Women’s Institute, Friendship Dinners, Days for Girls – Barrie, Empower Simcoe, S.H.I.F.T, and Tiffin Conservation Centre.

Our members include those who work in and retire from education – including child care and early years, schools and school boards, post-secondary, private schools and more. We play a key role in helping members stay active and connected – with each other and the community.

District 17 is situated on the traditional territory of Anishinabek Nation, specifically the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, on whose territory we are gathering today. We recognize that this territory is covered by the John Collins Purchase of 1795 and the Williams Treaties. We also acknowledge the urban Indigenous communities in our district.

District 17 Simcoe County recognizes the inequities connected to colonization and commits to working towards creating a just, inclusive and vibrant community for all.

We invite our members to reflect the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action.
